Local photographer Grant Fraley spotted a whale while he was shooting perch fishermen on the beach this past week.
“While I was on the beach, I seen this big swirl right in front of where the guys were casting,” Fraley wrote in a note to the Pilot. “And then this fin comes out of the water. At first I thought it was a great white shark until I seen the blowhole and heard it take a breath.”
A younger whale was seen in the mouth of the Chetco River last week.
“This whale was right on the beach,” Fraley said. “I have never seen one close to shore.”
The whale then headed upriver.
Gray whales are in the process of migrating north to feed on krill before their annual winter trek to Mexico to give birth.
