Students at Azalea Middle School recently gathered in the gym to watch schoolmates face off in the Battle of the Books.

Team members read 16 books and answered a series of questions at the Feb. 16 battle to score points.

The Miniature Literature Libro Llamas took first place with 25 points, while The Fluffy Unicorns took second place with 15 points.

The Alpacas and The Word Cookies faced off for third place, whereas The Word Cookies came out on top with 28 points to the Alpacas 16.

Brookings-Harbor Education Foundation provided cash for awards for this year’s top teams. Each member of the first-place Llamas received a trophy, while second-place Word Cookies and third-place Alpacas received medals.

The Llamas will go on to compete at regionals in Medford March 17 where they will take on teams from Lake, Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties. After regionals, the teams could travel to Salem in April for state finals competition.

The Kalmiopsis team also travels to Medford to compete on March 17 at the elementary level.
