Oregon State Parks will once again lead First Day Hikes on Jan. 1 throughout the state.
Two hikes are planned in Curry County, one in Brookings the other in Port Orford. Both are from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Harris Beach Interppretive Ranger Jeff Gallemore will lead a hike around Chetco Point at the end of Wharf Street in Brookings.
“I thought it would be a good opportunity to see the new work and itnroduce new folks, as well as regulars to this amazing trail in our back yard,” Gallemore said in an email. “Lots of history, flora and fauna.”
The city recently paved a loop trail and rebuilt a bridge to accommodate maintenance equipment.
It is a fairly easy trail of about 3/4 of a mile round trip. Meet at the Chetco Point parking lot in front of the Brookings Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The other hike will take people on a tour of Port Orford Heads State Park. This is a longer hike, but also has much history, flora and fauna. Meet at the Coast Guard Museum.
People participating in either hike should bring water and a camera, wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers.
