The Brookings-Harbor High School girls' basketball team had a difficult time handling the pressure put on by the Gold Beach Panthers as the Bruins (6-8) fell 54-28 Tuesday night.

andquot;When we handled the press, we were fine,andquot; Coach Chris Schofield said. andquot;When we didn't, it got ugly.andquot;

The Panthers (10-4) were able to use their full-court press to disrupt the Bruin backcourt and convert turnovers into easy baskets.

And when the Bruins did get into a half-court offense, they still had trouble scoring,

andquot;They were a physical team and it took us out of some of the things we were trying to do offensively,andquot; Schofield said. andquot;We didn't do enough to win tonight, bottom line.andquot;

In the first half, the Bruins managed just 10 points and trailed the Panthers by 12 heading into the second half.

The Bruins had their best scoring quarter in the third as they put 10 points on the board, but still trailed 34-20 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers stretched their lead to 26 points as they outscored the Bruins 20-8, fueled by three 3-pointers from Emmie Yeiter.

andquot;A big part of the problem was fatigue,andquot; Schofield said. andquot;They just wore us down.andquot;

Kara Miller led the Bruins with eight points and Ashley Juarez had five.

Taylor Keys, Chelsey Hannan and Ciara Freeman chipped in four points apiece while Miriam Hernandez and two and Lizeth Ochoa had one.

For the Panthers, Katherine Zuber led all scorers with 14 points while Yeiter and Molly Hockema added 11 points each.

In the JV game, the younger Bruins also fell to the Panthers 32-20.

Freeman and Sarah Pate had nine points apiece while Emilee Bottoms chipped in two.

Pate and Freeman also played excellent defense for the Bruins, recording multiple blocks and steals.

Lyndsey McDonald and Sydney Hadley each had six points for the Panthers.

The Panthers had an excellent game from the free-throw line, going 11-of-14 from the charity stripe.

On Friday, Jan. 11, the Bruins kick off league action against the North Bend Bulldogs (3-7) at North Bend.

The JV games starts at 4:15 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
