The Curry Coastal Pilot

Instrumental groups

I would like to make a comment on the article "EPA saving species for 40 years" (Pilot Dec. 28): I think someone did not do their homework!

Jane Stebbins stated that the EPA saved the gray whale, bald eagle, gray wolf and others. In fact the EPA had nothing to do with saving these species and others. The EPA stopped logging on federal land in our county and others because they - EPA - stated that logging was killing off the spotted owl. Which we found out years later was totally false. Outlawing DDT was the main factor in the enormous comeback of the bald eagle. The EPA had nothing to do with banning DDT.

The "World Wildlife Fund" and private organizations were instrumental in advancing the gray wolf populations. They also did a lot of redistributing of the species. As far as the gray whale? Greenpeace (all though I don't like their tactics) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) did a lot for population growth of the gray whale.

The (North Pacific-North American) gray whale migrates from Alaskan waters down Canadian waters past U.S. then into Mexican waters. I don't think the EPA has any jurisdiction over Canada and Mexico waters. The (Western Pacific -Asia) gray whale have quite a few organizations including the IFAW in the western Pacific ocean. The saving of whales worldwide was started with the 1971 Pelly Amendment. Which was passed by the U.S. Congress, not the EPA.

Shelters work well

In response to: Arthur D. Larason's letter of 15 January, 2014:

Mr. Larason: You stated that you have had four dogs in the past.

As a person who claims to care for his animals, you should not only understand, but also appreciate the wonderful animal shelters and their rules of adoption. These establishments, with loving and hard-working people, are dedicated to protect all the precious animals in their care. Part of that protection is speaking for dogs that cannot say, "Please keep me safe in your home and in your fenced back yard."

I am personally quite familiar with our own South Coast Humane Society and they are the best example of caregivers whose hope is to find homes for the animals with only a few basic rules of adoption.

Ideas of Obamacare

Due to the lack of proper research of the facts, the recent Letter to the Editor that I read Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, from a prominent business owner regarding implementation of an Obamacare type health coverage in 2006 in Massachusetts by Governor Mitt Romney is not correct.

Several suggested proposals of health coverage that were grouped into an article had been written around that time. From my research and conversation with a Heritage Foundation representative, Heritage had no directing in the implementation of any health care in Massachusetts in 2006, or by then Governor Mitt Romney as stated by the author of the article.

It's up to us as American citizens and responsible thinking individuals to do the research and find out the facts when community active persons in our fine community say or write opinions stated as facts. It's up to you fellow Americans to fight the good fight for truth, justice and the American way.

Ask any person who had insurance and now has to buy government insurance instead. Ask if their monthly premiums are going up; chances are premiums are increasing greatly.

Remember the bold statement, stated as verbal insurance by our president, "you can keep your doctor if you like your doctor, you can keep your health plan if you like your health plan, period."
