The Curry Coastal Pilot

Are you frustrated with local government? Think you can do a better job running the school, port, fire or cemetery district?

Well, now is your chance.

There are 99 open seats on various district boards in Curry County. And there's very little competition.

A check of Curry County's election Web site showed, as of Tuesday, two days before the filing deadline, 79 people had filed for most of the open seats, which will be voted on in the May 19 election. One person has filed for a seat on the Port of Brookings-Harbor Commission, and three for the Brookings-Harbor School Board.

In Oregon, we elect our neighbors to be the volunteer policy makers for our local government. In Curry County, these are the local cemetery, fire, health, port, library, sanitary, school and water districts.

For those who openly question or criticize the actions of local government: Here's a golden opportunity to step from the stands and into the arena, to become an active participant in the democratic process.

The citizens who fill these unpaid, sometimes thankless, positions are crucial to keeping the inner workings of our society running effectively.

Many who have served in such positions have often commented about the satisfaction and pride that comes with taking an active role in their community.

We applaud their involvement and encourage others to follow suit.

Here are dozens of opportunities to become an active part of your community andndash; a chance to bring topics you think are important into a public forum, and into the minds of your fellow citizens.
