Bertier L. Reed, 87, passed away March 22, 2012, at a local care facility in Brookings.

Bertier was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Benjamin W. and C. Lenore (Crooks) Krupp.

In 1927, the Krupp family of four, along with six other relatives, traveled to Santa Cruz, Calif., for a year's visit.

They all loved the beauty and weather of the West Coast and California, and never moved back to Michigan.

Bertier married McKinley "Mac" W. Reed July 15, 1940, in Reno, Nev.

Bertier and Mac had three children when Mac was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1943.

Another child was born after his return to Santa Cruz, at the end of World War II.

They loved raising their family of four children in west Santa Cruz, nine blocks from the beaches of the beautiful Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Bertier loved to sing and play hymns on her piano, while Mac sang and played his guitar.

Following their retirement in 1976, Mac and Bertier traveled across North America, Canada, and Mexico in their RV.

Then they spent six years of winters in Arizona, and the summers in Oregon. In 1992 they settled in Brookings.

They were married 70 years until death took Mac last year.

Bertier was a Christian from the age of 10, and a member of Garfield Park Christian Church in Santa Cruz.

Survivors include her son Mac Wayne Reed of Ennis, Mont.; daughters Linda L. Vink and her husband Pete of McAllister, Mont.; Donna D. Criswell and her husband Richard of Brookings, and Shirley A. Criswell and her husband Thomas of Grants Pass. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren.

No public ceremony will be held. Private inurnment was at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery, in Brookings.
