Werner J. Carlson, 83, of Brookings, died March 20, 2006, in Reno, Nev., of cancer.

He was born April 7, 1922, in Spokane, Wash., to George Carlson and Teckla Broberg.

Mr. Carlson enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, and served in the 8th Air Force during World War II.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Eastern Washington University in Pullman, Wash., in 1948, and a master's from the University of Southern California in 1958.

He retired after 29 years as an educator in Orange County, California. During his retirement he became a world traveler and food connoisseur. In 1992 Mr. Carlson moved to Brookings. He participated in Mirth and Laughter and Saturday brunch groups while living in Brookings.

Survivors include daughters Debby Carlson of Reno and Arlene Carlson of Tucson, Ariz.; grandson Andy and his wife Angela Morss of Sparks, Nev.; granddaughter Jennifer Morss and her husband Tom Dunn of Sparks; great-grandsons Robert and Paul Morss; and special friend Julie Penton and her family.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.
