Authorities believe that fatigue may have played a part in the death of a Brookings man who crashed his car on Highway 101 Saturday morning near the stateline after working a double shift at Pelican Bay State Prison.
The Oregon State Police (OSP) said that Joel Ramos, 29, was pronouned dead at the scene after the 2007 Dodge Caliber he was driving crossed into the uncoming lane, off the road and crashed head-on into a tree, about one mile north of the Oregon/California border.
Ramos was on his way home from working at the prison when he crashed at 7:15 a.m., the OSP reported.
Ramos was using a seatbelt, and the car's airbags had deployed. Driver fatigue is being investigated as a possible contributing factor, the OSP reported.
OSP troopers from the Gold Beach office are investigating the cause of the crash. OSP was assisted by Brookings Police Department, local fire personnel and Oregon Department of Transportation.
