The Curry Coastal Pilot

The Chetco Pelican Players present the musical "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings.

Based on the 1988 film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson (Don Jones) who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Lawrence has the secretive assistance of French Police Chief Andre Thibault (Edgar Perez). The other grifter, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson (Matthew Perez), more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health.

After meeting in a hotel lobby, the two unsuccessfully begin working together, attempting to cheat seemingly wealthy ladies Muriel Eubanks (Jamie Legate) and Jolene Oakes (Bre Ellis) only to find that their small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate (Karen de Lucca), wins - and the other must leave town. A battle of cons ensues.

Directed by Mary Anne Trailor, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" also stars Daisy Carr, Ellen Stadelman, Holly Carr, Kelly Scruggs, Klaus Gielisch, Ralph Dickey, Samantha Avizinis, Susan Brickley, Zack Hanners and Dylan Panter.
