Divers did not recover a body Wednesday morning after making a thorough search of the water around the docks at the ice plant at the Port of Brookings Harbor.

The dive team from the Lakeside Fire Department searched the water for several hours but found nothing.

The Curry County Sheriff's Office had called the dive team to search the water after it was suspected that Harlen Wade Smith, 23, may have fallen into the water Sunday evening. Smith was last seen Sunday night and is now the subject of a missing persons investigation.

The United States Coast Guard searched the port Sunday night after receiving a call reporting a splash and voices in the port. A shoe was found Sunday night at the dock near the ice house after the Coast Guard had received a call. The Sheriff's Department later determined the shoe belonged to Smith.

Smith worked on a commercial fishing vessel and had been drinking the night of his disappearance, according to people interviewed by the Sheriff's Department, Sheriff John Bishop said. Smith was last seen headed in the direction of the docks.

The dive team reported limited visibility in the cold, murky water and had to rely on feeling the bottom by hand as it made a systematic search of the area. Sheriff's deputies also searched all the docks and other areas around the port.

Lt. John Wade said the sheriff's department would continue investigating Smith's disappearance.
