The Brookings City Council Monday appointed councilor Ron Hendenskog mayor, replacing Larry Anderson, who stepped down last week citing personal reasons.

The council is accepting applications to fill Hendenskog's seat. The mayor's seat will be up for election in November.

The position 4 seat formerly held by Hendenskog, is not up for election until January 2015. Hedenskog, running his campaign on community roots and making it easier for local developers to work with the city, was first elected in 2006. Prior to that he served on the Brookings Planning Commission for 1 1/2 years.

"This community owes a big debt of gratitude from former mayor Anderson," said councilor Jake Pieper. "The calm waters this council has had the past several years, the civility and decorum on the council, is in large part due to Mayor Anderson."

Councilor Dave Gordon concurred.

"He was consistently fair to citizens who talk to us and give us their thoughts," he said. "There was something he brought to council that at that time in history had not been there."

Hedenskog has lived in Brookings area for 45 years. He worked for South Coast Lumber for nearly 20 years in addition to starting his own construction company and working for the Richard B. Davis Company Inc. of Gasquet, Calif.
