Almost from its inception in 1988, the Chetco Activity Center has served the shut-in seniors of Brookings and south Curry County, delivering Meals-on-Wheels five days a week.
By our name and our beginnings, as the Chetco Senior Center, we have always been devoted to seniors, to improving their quality of life and their environments.
Recently, with an expanded agenda to serve the broader community, we changed the name to Chetco Activity Center and lately, hosted Fundthe4thFireworks, SHIBA appointments, free tax counseling and the weekly program Time-Out for Seniors.
Every Monday, the Time-Out for Seniors program, under grants, helps caregivers take a day off, and we currently has openings for new clients — at no charge.
Our most important service is delivering Meals-on-Wheels to homebound seniors or disabled who have no other way to get regular, nourishing meals at home. This service is not fully funded, so only a small portion is covered by government grants.
Therefore, community participation in programs at the Chetco Activity Center is how we keep the doors open for everyone.
Community help is three-fold:
•Buy tickets to our Thanksgiving Day Dinner Nov. 23, 2017.
•Become a member of the center with your annual membership fee of $15, or your lifetime membership of $150, entitling you to all our sponsored classes, workshops and recreations for free.
•Invite a friend and have a lunch date with us weekly for the suggested donation of $6 for seniors and $7.50 for those under 60 years of age. Every meal served helps fund a meal delivered at home. Very generous volunteers do all the driving for Meals-on-Wheels. Our gratitude to the many volunteers is boundless.
Our Thanksgiving Dinner fundraiser has two seatings, 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and includes a complete turkey dinner, a selection of pies, beverage and a raffle for gift certificates to help with your early Christmas shopping. Dinner tickets are $14 in advance or $16 at the door.
On Dec. 5, our new friends, the Coastline Neighbors’ clients and volunteers will join us for lunch and provide ice cream for dessert.
Come in to get a calendar of events, or call us between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., weekdays, at 541-469-6822. We are also online at www.chetcoac.org.
Our board of directors and all our members hope you and your families have a wonderful holiday season this year.
