There’s a potential for chaos in the Brookings area this weekend — with smoke-filled skies, fire evacuations, eclipse-related traffic jams and regularly-schedule events — and we ask everyone to take deep breath, stay patient, stay out of the way of emergency personnel, and look out for one another.
It doesn’t help that the eerie orange glow cast by the smoke-shrouded sun has transforms our community into the land Mordor, but there are no evil eyes, orcs and wargs at our door. Yes, there is a huge wildfire nearby, and we have faith in the firefigthing agencies and army of personnel battling it head on.
This is not the first time.
For longtime residents, the conditions are a reminder of the 2002 Biscuit Fire, which burned nearly 500,000 acres of wilderness east of Brookings. We survived that conflagaration, we will survive this one.
