The Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) has launched the “Get on Board” campaign to encourage community members to run for school board positions throughout the state.

It’s a worthwhile endeavor, and we’d like to take it one step further, encouraging Curry County residents to seek positions on other boards — ports, cities and special districts — as well.

You have some time to think about it: Candidates must file by March 16 to be eligible for the May 2017 ballot.

According to OSBA, the May 2016 election saw the lowest number of candidates for Oregon school board seats in a decade, and nearly three-quarters of all candidates, many of them incumbents, ran unopposed.

That trend was reflected also in Curry County, not just with the school board races, but with those for seats on various boards.

We encourage residents to consider investing their time and energy by serving on local boards. Also, we’d like to see current board members offer their expertise for another term and motivate community members to take up the challenge of volunteer board work.

Doing so will help guarantee that local government continues to be run by and for local residents.
