On behalf of the Brookings-Harbor School District Food Service and Youth Transition Program, we would like to thank Curt and Susan Lunsford for their dedication to feeding students in our community.
As a part of the Brookings-Harbor Rotary, the Lunsfords drive hundreds of miles each year to gather food for our local community, feeding those who access the local food bank, community kitchens and the local school district.
It is organizations like Rotary and people like the Lunsfords that make Brookings an amazing place to live.

The photo press story invitation in the Pilot to participate in the Valentines for Veterans Event brought many community members.
Special thanks to the artists and Cape Sebastian Daughters of the American Revolution and their guests who braved rainy, stormy weather to enjoy a continental breakfast and create more than 200 beautiful, unique and thoughtful valentines for veterans.
This event started six years ago on Valentine’s Day when a group of community ladies delivered three baskets of handmade valentines to the Post members. There were so many, the chaplain made deliveries to local assisted-living veterans.
When the community was invited to share creating cards, the response has been fantastic because the valentines have also been shared with assisted-living veterans, family members of veterans, the local VA clinic and close VA hospitals.

I have never been more proud of an industry. I spent 35 years of my life in handling the advertising from Nestle to Mattel, Taco Bell, Levi Strauss, the Happy Cows of California and more.
In these partisan times of incredible divide that seem impossible to bring together, a number of national and local advertisers spent millions of dollars to promote social good and shared values.
Coke continued a theme of inclusion. Kraft celebrated families. Hyundai funds cancer research, and though the product is a Budweiser product, the commercial was about providing clean water to those suffering from major natural disasters. And there were others.
I also want to acknowledge United Indian Health Services for their full-page ad in the recent Health & Fitness Directory in the Pilot and Triplicate. Instead of doing self-promotion, they took on an issue that is plaguing our local communities that no one wants to talk about and offered important information on how everyone can be part of the solution.
The ad was designed to bring awareness to the problem our area has with suicide, noting that we all have the power to prevent suicide. It also provided us with what signs to look for in someone in crisis and how to help. Also, thanks for including the crisis text line 741741.
