Summer is coming and the Oregon south coast is gearing up for a number of festivals, fairs and summer events.

With this time of year comes the reality of increased traffic and highway incidents.

In a recent press release, Oregon State Police (OSP) said they are committed to traffic safety through the priority enforcement of the “Fatal Five” or the acronym SOLID, which stands for Speed, Occupant Safety, Lane Safety, Impaired Driving, and Distracted Driving.

According to the release, OSP would like to remind everyone:

•Drive sober. This means of any substance that impairs your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle including otherwise legal substances such as; alcohol, prescription drugs or legally consumed marijuana.

•Don’t drive distracted. It is illegal to talk or text on your cell phone in Oregon while operating a motor vehicle.

•Be a safe and courteous driver to others. Plan your trip and expect delays, check ODOT Tripcheck https://tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp to look for current updates on your route.

Other safe driving tips from OSP:

•Obey all traffic laws but especially observe safe following distances and safe speeds and wear a safety belt.

•Oregon has a new move-over law that took effect on Jan. 1 requiring drivers move over, not just for emergency vehicles, but for any vehicle on the side of the road with hazard lights on, flares or an emergency sign.

•Protect your valuables. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle in public areas.

During the spring and summer months, OSP responds to significantly increased reports of unlawful entry into motor vehicles, theft, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct in state and federal parks along the Coos and Curry County coastlines, according to the release.

To address these incidents in addition to regular patrols, OSP is planning high visibility enforcement campaigns during the weekends of Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor day as well as during local annual events that affect traffic.
