A bicyclist died at Rogue Regional Center in Medford Friday afternoon after he was struck by a chip truck on U.S. 101 near Whaleshead Resort, eight miles north of Brookings.
Oregon State Police Patrol Sgt. Dave Aydelotte said the truck driver, 57-year-old Robert Bailey of Coos Bay, was headed north at about 12:15 p.m. when a bicyclist crossed from the east side of the highway to the west and back, in front of the truck.
Cal-Ore helicopter medics landed on the highway and transported the bicyclist to Medford with serious injuries,
The identity of the bicyclist was not released as of press time.
The highway was reopened at 1:40 p.m. and the northbound lane closed at 4 p.m. so OSP troopers could conduct a crash reconstruction investigation.
