A troupe of elves was busy decorating light poles and trees along Chetco Avenue Saturday morning in preparation for the Christmas season.

The people are volunteers from Coastal Christmas Elves, led by Kathy Breshears. They gathered at the DownTown Coffee Lounge before heading out with ladders and boxes of decorations.

The volunteers also created a nautical-themed display at Bankus Park.

Now that the main street through Brookings has been decorated, a Christmas light parade and Santa event is in the works. Festivities are Saturday, Dec. 9.

The parade lineup begins at 4:30 p.m. on Lundeen Lane next to KidTown in Azalea Park. The parade, which include Santa riding on a fire truck, starts at 5:15 p.m. and proceeds down Azalea Park Road, Pacific Avenue, Oak Street and Chetco Avenue to Oasis Park.

At the park, children can visit with Santa. Cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider will be served.

To sign up for the parade, call Kathy Breshears at 541-412-0674.
