Torrential rains did little to dampen the spirits, or the appetites, of close to 500 Thanksgiving dinner guests at the Event Center on the Beach in Gold Beach Thursday.

A small army of volunteers carved up some 450 pounds of roasted turkey, 100 pounds of ham, and spooned from piping hot pans mountains of mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and rolls to an appreciative audience, according to David Honie, of the Curry Friends, who heads up the annual free dinner.

Gold Beach residents Mary Ann Gray and Alta Denton come every year and the two friends enjoy getting together for the big meal.

“The food is fantastic!” said Gray, as Denton chimed in, “It always is!”

Nearby, a long table offered up a bevy of ready-to-go desserts, including home-made pumpkin, apple and blackberry pies, as well as hand-sized chocolate chip cookies.
