After keeping it close for the first two games, the Brookings-Harbor High School volleyball team failed to find their rhythm in the final game as they were swept in their league opener by Siuslaw Thursday evening (20-25, 23-25 and 11-25).

"Our passing is really hurting us right now," Coach Lori Cooper said. "But in the second and third games, we did much better with our blocking, which helped."

The Bruins (0-1, 4-3) came out flat in game one and trailed by as many as seven early on in the game.

A big block by Stephanie Kerr, one of her 10 on the night, cut the lead to three points 14-17.

But the Bruins couldn't erase the rest of the lead and fell in game one 20-25.

The Bruins kept it close again in the second game and led for a majority of the game.

Kills by Kerr, Dani Olson and Sarah Pate helped the Bruins maintain their lead.

Another big block by Kerr put the Bruins up 22-20 and a back row kill by Kerr gave the Bruins a 23-22 advantage, but then three straight kills by the Vikings (1-0, 4-3) clinched the win in game two.

Game three was tough on the Bruins as they got out to a slow start, trailed 4-17 and never recovered on their way to a 11-25 loss.

Kerr led the Bruins with 10 kills and 10 blocks on the night.

Olson had seven kills and two blocks while Pate had five kills.

Molly Vance led the Bruins with 12 assists while Danielle Ambrose and Shawna Cooper had four and three assists, respectively.

The JV Bruins lost their first match of the year to the Vikings in three games (16-25, 25-22, 5-15).

In their first competition of the year, the JV2 squad lost to Siuslaw in two ( 17-25 and 5-25).

The next game for the Bruins will be at home on Tuesday, Sept. 25 against Douglas, with the JV team playing at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity squad at 7 p.m.
