The Azalea Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls' basketball teams ran into a pair of talented North Bend teams Monday as the Bruins dropped both games to the Bulldogs.

In the eighth grade game, the Bruins started out strong, implementing a good press break and getting the Bulldogs to get into early foul trouble.

After the first half, the Bruins held a 26-15 lead, but struggled to score in the third quarter, making only two field goals to go up 30-25 heading into the fourth.

The Bulldogs were able to mount a comeback and take the lead in the fourth quarter.

With just about two minutes left to play, Maysea Young put back an offensive rebound and Kambri Coleman sank two free throws to put the Bruins back up by three, 38-35.

But the Bulldogs made a late surge and went on a 7-1 run in the final 1:45 of play to secure a 42-39 win for North Bend.

Young and Coleman both had excellent games for the Bruins on both sides of the ball as Young went for 17 points and Coleman added 12 points.

Jamie Alto chipped in four points while Dani Woodcock, Shantell Goodwin and Kodie Hebert added two points each.

In the opening game, the seventh grade Bruins started out slow in the first half and trailed 32-12 at halftime.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 23 by the end of the third quarter, 42-19.

But in the fourth quarter, the Bruins fought back and started rebounding on the offensive glass and getting putbacks and drawing fouls to outscore North Bend 18-14 in the quarter.

"At least we came back and played with them in the second half," Coach Kristy Kleespies said.

Lakota Hatcher led the Bruins with nine points in the game while Josey Glazebrook and Sami Young had six points apiece.

Christy Reynolds added five points and had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Rounding out the scoring for the Bruins was Kaleen Bishop and Sarah Ziemer with three points each, Lynette Ochoa and Kaitlan Mitts chipped in two apiece and Carissa Lamb added one point.

The next game for the Azalea Bruins will be at 4 p.m. today (Dec. 12) against Myrtle Crest.
