A tremendous defensive effort from the Brookings-Harbor High School softball team kept the Douglas Trojans off the scoreboard as the Bruins swept their doubleheader with the Trojans 4-0 and 2-0 Friday afternoon.

"I think we brought our best game today," Coach Steve Padilla said. "Our defense has been coming together and the infield and outfield are working really well together."

The Bruins (3-0, 7-6) were able to keep the Trojans off the bases throughout the day with stellar pitching and defense.

But even when Douglas did manage to get on base, the Bruins always seemed to step up their game and get out of jams.

"I'm really proud of how the girls played," Padilla said. "Especially how we raised our level of play in the clutch and stepped up our pitching and defense with runners on. Overall, this is a very close team with great leadership."

Game one: Douglas 0, Brookings 4

In the first game, Jessie Goergen struck out seven batters and the Bruin defense only allowed five hits in the 4-0 victory.

After Goergen struck out the side in the top of the second, the Bruins took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Brooke Blofsky led off the inning with a double to the left field wall and then scored on an RBI single by Jennifer Sirchuck.

With Sirchuck on second and only one out, Breanne Manley hit a single up the middle to bring home Sirchuck and give the Bruins an early 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Goergen scored on a hustle play from third base after Jeana Hensley beat out an infield single.

Blofsky then ripped her second double of the game to score Hensley from second and put the Bruins up 4-0.

Goergen and Douglas' Katy King did an excellent job on the mound as neither team could score a run after the third inning.

Blofsky led the Bruins with two hits on the day and Jillian McCool, Goergen, Hensley, Jamie Kay, Sirchuck and Manley each had one hit apiece.

Game two: Douglas 0, Brookings 2

Once again, a solid pitching performance from Goergen and stellar defense led the way for the Bruins as they grinded out a 2-0 win in game two.

The Bruins scored both their runs in the bottom of the third as Goergen hit a two-run triple to center field.

With one out in the third, Savannah Beckley started out the rally as she hit a ball through the legs of the shortstop to reach first.

McCool then reached on another Trojan error to give the Bruins runners on first and second.

WIth two outs, Goergen cleared the bases with her monster triple to score Beckley and McCool for the only runs of the game.

The Bruins played excellent defense all the way around and were led by McCool at second base, who had 11 put outs on the day.

Goergen had a pair of hits in game two and McCool, Kara Miller, Blofsky, Kay and Beckley each had one hit.

The next game for the Bruins will be an away contest at North Bend on Tuesday, April 15 at 4:30 p.m.
