LOCAL FARMERS MARKETS OFFER BOUNTY OF GOODS, PRODUCE

The governor of Oregon has proclaimed Aug. 2-9 to be Farmers Market Week, and two of those are located in Harbor.

The Saturday Brookings Harbor Farmers' Market is held on the boardwalk at the Port of Brookings Harbor from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. The market is seven years old and Violet and Len Burton have managed it for three years.

"The market is ever changing," said Len Burton. "Once in a while we have vendors participate who are traveling through the area. Sometimes a couple comes to fish and the wife sets up a booth while her husband goes fishing."

The market has a core group of farmers, baker and artisans who participate each week during the season, mid June through mid October.

"The regulars seem like family," says Violet Burton.

The Wednesday market at the grounds of the Chetco Grange Community Center, at the corner of Highway 101 and Zimmerman Lane began last Wednesday and is managed by Kathy and Rich of Otterbee Farms and Fungi. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kathy said, "Opening day we had five farmers."

Otterbee Farms started a CSA this year and the produce can be picked up on Wednesdays at the market.

Both local farmers markets are alive with color and friendly people. Local musicians play on Saturday and handcrafted items are offered by the many artisans.

Shoppers can pick up fresh-baked bread from the Village Baker and take home a fresh flower bouquet. On Wednesday shoppers can select produce from the five farmers in the area.
