Several of the best track athletes from across Oregon met at the 14th annual, “The Pre” Rotary Invitational track and field meet last Saturday at Marshfield High School.

The Pre, named after legendary distance runner and former Marshfield standout athlete Steve Prefontaine, is unlike other meets in that only the best two to three athletes per event, per school, are invited to attend. Thus the meet provides a good barometer for any athlete to test themselves against a competitive field before they head into league meets in May.

“I like this meet because there are bigger schools than what we face in our district,” said Brookings-Harbor High School hurdler Shaine Graham, who finished second in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. “It does a good job at mimicking the competition we’ll meet in state.”

The best from BHHS and Gold Beach competed against several 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools, with several former league and state champions in attendance. Far West league schools such as Sutherlin and host Marshfield, as well as schools from Newport, Crook County and Central Linn, competed in the 26-team field.

In addition to Graham’s great finishes, several BHHS athletes had outstanding performances. Ronnie Manley won the javelin event; David Joyce finished second in the 200-meter sprint; distance runner Chris Burton finished second in the 3,000-meter race; and Sophie Landau finished second in the 400-meter race.

The top ten finishers for both BHHS and Gold Beach are listed below.
