The Brookings-Harbor High School track and field team kicked-off their 2014 season by hosting the BHHS Ice Breaker meet this past Wednesday.

BHHS competed against athletes from Del Norte, Gold Beach and Port Orford Pacific high schools in a meet that saw a great turnout and plenty of competition.

Both the Bruin boys and girls performed well, finishing second to Del Norte.

Several Bruins won individual and team events. Colby Welch won the girls triple-jump, Gabe Brazelton won the boys 400-meter race and Kendra Graham was victorious in the long jump.

Both boys and girls 4x100-meter relay teams won their races and the Bruins swept the top three spots in the javelin, with Ronnie Manley finishing first with a mark of 159-feet and sixth-tenths-of-an-inch.

For many of these athletes just getting out there and competing is enough of a reward.

“It was stressful in the beginning but as soon as the gun went off that all went away,” said Bruin freshman hurdler Breanna Brevan.

“It was fun. It was kind of cool to just test everything out and set that standard for the rest of the year,” added Lady Bruin Abbey Schreiber.

“It’s usually warmer here so I’m looser and it’s easy to warm up,” said Pacific’s Cole Kruetzer.

“The track is very nice and it’s a lot better than what I’m used too.”
