Douglas A. Baldwin Sr.

Feb. 11, 1934-Feb. 9, 2014

 Douglas A. Baldwin, Sr., 79, passed away Feb. 9, 2014, at his home in Brookings, 

Douglas was born Feb. 11, 1934, in San Bernardino, Calif., to Alfred and Dorothy (Francis) Baldwin. 

He attended school in Colton, Calif., before entering the U.S. Navy. He served honorably during the Korean War in the submarine division. 

Douglas married Sandra on Nov. 29, 1974, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Brookings in 1980 where they started a nursery — Baldwin’s Fuchsia World. Douglas and Sandra also operated Elk Valley Gardens in Crescent City and the Foxglove Nursery in Brookings. 

They retired in 1996. Douglas enjoyed prospecting, gardening and woodworking. 

Survivors include his wife Sandra of Brookings; son Douglas Baldwin Jr. of Brookings; daughters Denise Hughes of Springfield, Mo., Deborah Rounds of Palm Springs, Calif., and Brenda Price of Portland; stepson Rob Sutherland of Eatonville, Wash.; sister Rebecca McIntosh of San Bernardino, Calif. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

No public ceremony will be held.
