About 75 homes lost water because of a water line break on Memory Lane.

About 75 homes are without water because of water line break at the corner of Memory Lane and Buena Vista Loop in Brookings. Water service is expected to return by 6 p.m.

The city was excavating a hole, preparing to replace a water valve the next day, according to Richard Christensen, public works supervisor for the city of Brookings. While excavating the hole, the water pipe broke, causing flooding and the need to shut off the water to homes on Memory Lane, Buena Vista Loop, Cypress and Cedar street.

Flooding was minimal and caused no damage to private property, with the water draining to storm drains. The city has been replacing the intake pipe on Memory Lane since earlier in the fall.
