“I’m real happy with how the kids ran,” head cross country coach Terry Axel said. “It’s a hilly course and a tough season opener. For some of these kids, especially the freshmen, it’s a real eye-opener.”

The Bruins cross country team was at the Beat the Heat Invitational in Arcata, Calif. Both the boys and girls teams took third place overall.

Runner of note for the boys team was sophomore Chris Burton who finished in third place with a time of 17:38.

Top runner for the girls team was freshman Deborah Lawrence who took eighth place with a time of 22:38.

The Bruins will host the Brookings-Harbor Invitational on Saturday with races scheduled to begin at noon.
