Ryan Olds, 18, a 2013 graduate of Brookings-Harbor High School, died in a car accident early Saturday morning on North Bank Chetco River Road.

Olds was driving alone and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the accident, according to Lt. John Ward of the Curry County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 4:47 a.m., a sheriff’s dispatcher received a 911 call of car crash approximately 5 miles up the North Bank Chetco River Road near the Upper Chetco School.

Upon arriving to the scene, Sheriff’s Deputy John Ensley determined Olds, who was the only person in the car, was dead.

According to the initial investigation, Olds was driving a car that did not belong to him and that he did not have authorization to drive it, Ward said. The car Olds was driving was reported missing later that morning at around 8:30 a.m.

Ward said witnesses told investigators that Olds had been drinking heavily earlier that night at a party prior to taking the car.

The investigation into Olds death is continuing, Ward said.

Olds moved to Brookings with his family five years ago from California. While attending BHHS, he was a catcher for the baseball team.

Olds had planned to enter the National Guard in October and wanted to be a police officer, according to family members.

A celebration of Olds’ life will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at Living Waters Foursquare Church, 1136 Fifield St. in Brookings.
