Fourth of July event to raise funds for aquatic center feasibility study

The Friends of the Brookings-Harbor Aquatic Center (FBHAC) is planning to make its third annual Fourth of July Barbecue and Field Day bigger and better than before.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Azalea Park band shell on Thursday, July 4.

“The first year we had about 150 people, then we had about 300 last year. We hope to have between 500 and 600 this year,” said FBHAC board member Chuck Weller.

The event will include a barbecue, live music, silent auction, pie-eating contest and auction, pie-baking contest, raffles and family games.

Tickets for the barbecue are $8 and are available at Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts, A Wild Bird and Backyard General Store and online at http://www.fbhac.org.

Weller recommended purchasing tickets in advance. People have purchased a barbecue lunch at the event, “but last year we almost ran out of food,” he said.

The menu includes a burger with all the trimmings, chips, watermelon and a drink.

Two things are new about his year’s pie baking contest, Weller said. There will be no entry fee and anyone can be a judge. To be a judge, people can go to the FBHAC website, sign up and pay a fee.

Raffle tickets are also on sale and may be purchased at the same ticket outlets as the barbecue. This year a 16GB iPad Mini donated by Fred Meyer and a Kenmore Stainless Steel Gas Grill donated by Sears will be raffled. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Ticket purchasers may choose which item they wish to try to win, Weller said.

The event is to raise money for FBHAC to pay for a feasibility study to build an aquatic center in Brookings. For more information, call 541-251-0617, send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or visit the FBHAC website.
