With just three events to compete in at the OSAA 4A State Track and Field Championships on Saturday, the Brookings-Harbor High School track and field team felt the pressure to make something happen and members of the boys 4x100-meter relay team did just that as they ran for an eighth-place finish and a bit of hardware with a time of 44.19.

“We have two people who have never been here before — me and Zack,” junior Trent Bevan said. “I don’t feel like it affected me, and I feel like we could have run a little faster, but our handoffs weren’t as good as they were at districts.”

Being in the outside lane affected the Bruins a little, according to senior Zack Konkel, but not enough to make a big difference.

“Whenever I see Gabe run that corner on the inside it really makes him kick in front of everybody, and it’s a confidence booster,” Konkel said. “Gabe is probably the fastest guy running the third leg out there.”

For Konkel, the lone senior on the team, getting to state was a dream-come-true.

“I just wanted to get here,” he said. “It’s one of the best weekends of my life. Being out here, running with these guys. It’s more than unbelievable.”

The four — Konkel, Bevan, Gabe Brazelton and David Joyce — were also presented with a baton from a member of the 1988 BHHS record holder team, Tim VanDehey. VanDehey presented the baton to the team at the state championships.

Senior Shaylin Curtis aimed for the podium in Saturday’s race but fell just short as she posted a time of 5:07.65. The time put Curtis in 11th place and was just .41 seconds off of her personal best set at the Far West League District Championships.

The 4x400-meter relay team also competed on Saturday and posted a personal record setting time of 3:32.02 for a 10th-place finish.
