Firefighters on Tuesday quickly extinguished a trailer fire on Donna Lane, six miles up South Bank Chetco River Road, before it could spread to the surrounding forest, authorities said.

At the same time, officers from Oregon State Police and the Curry County Sheriff’s Department arrested Christopher Lee Webb, 23, at the scene on two warrants, a felony drug warrant out of Jackson County and a misdemeanor warrant in Curry County for criminal mischief.

Webb, authorities believed, started the fire, but he was not charged with arson because he and his parents, who live on the property, said the fire was started accidently.

“They said it ws an accident, but we’re going to be checking into it further,” said Curry County Sheriff John Bishop.

Brookings Police Dispatch received a 911 call about a fifth-wheel trailer on fire at about 6 p.m. Multiple fire agencies were called when it appeared the fire might spread to nearby trees.

Firefighter agencies responding to the blaze included those in Brookings, Harbor, Winchuck and Cape Ferrelo.

The fire was contained at about 7 p.m.
