Police Log May 8, 2013

Friday, May 3 

Non-injury vehicle accident, 3:27 a.m.: A vehicle backed into a power pole in the 1100 block of Chetco Avenue causing one of the lines to come loose and caused a power outage to at least one business. The power line, after a witness saw it arc and break loose from the building, settled under the vehicle. An officer arrived on scene to assist and Coos-Curry Electric responded to shut off the power so the vehicle could be moved. 

Information, 7:38 a.m.: Two male juveniles were warned for riding their bikes with no brakes and no helmets at Brookings-Harbor High School. They were given a week to put the brakes back on the bikes or they would be given a citation. The officer contacted the juveniles’ parents and advised them. 

Suspicious conditions, 8:06 a.m.: Marina Heights Loop. 

Abandoned vehicle, 8:34 a.m.: Hassett and Third streets. 

Hit and run, 8:42 a.m.: Two people called 911 to report a vehicle that hit a parked car at Holly Lane and Oceanview Drive. 

Lost property, 10:42 a.m.: A caller lost his wallet on Fir Street. A description was taken. 

Dispute/fight, 10:49 a.m.: Police were called for a domestic dispute in progress in the 97800 block of Court Street. 

Injury vehicle accident, 11:12 a.m.: A traffic accident at Wharf and Railroad Streets blocked one lane. Police, ambulance and fire responded. One person was transported by ambulance. 

Criminal trespass, 12:22 p.m.: 900 block of Chetco Avenue. 

Non-injury vehicle accident, 12:24 p.m.: A family disturbance issue resulted in a vehicle versus pedestrian accident in the 500 block of Pacific Avenue. One person was cited for careless driving and illegal backing. 

Unauthorized use of a vehicle, 1:02 p.m.: A stolen vehicle report was taken in the 600 block of old County Road. 

Loud noise, 1:48 p.m.: A resident complained of loud noise since the previous night. An officer spoke with a tenant in the 500 block of Fir Street who agreed to keep the noise down. 

Tree down, 1:56 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree down and blocking the right lane of traffic on Carpenterville Road north of Duley Creek Road. 

Injury vehicle accident, 2:09 p.m.: 500 block of Fir Street. 

Suspicious conditions, 2:54 p.m.: A report was received of a door to door salesman with no license on Hampton Road at Kendall Lane. The caller and the salesman got into a verbal argument. The salesman was advised of the city business license rule.  

Animal complaint, 3:49 p.m.: A caller reported two dogs were left inside a black vehicle in front of a local business in the 16200 block of Highway 101. The caller was concerned with their welfare due to the heat. 

Suspicious conditions, 6:04 p.m.: A caller was concerned about a man laying over luggage at Fifth Street and Chetco Avenue. The caller was unsure if he was sleeping or needed help. An officer spoke with a known transient who said he was enjoying the sunshine in an awkward position. 

Rescue operation, 7:43 p.m.: A call was received regarding four people who were playing on the rocks on Harris Beach and the tide came in. Within a couple of minutes, a second call came in to advise dispatch that all of the people had crossed the water to the beach and were safe. 

Animal control, 7:53 p.m.: A citizen in the 400 block of Buena Vista Loop reported that a deer had crashed through her fence and destroyed her property. She requested an officer do something about the deer, which was no longer on her property. An officer contacted her and provide her information on who to call for nuisance animals. 

Driving complaint, 8:25 p.m.: A driving complaint was received regarding a possible intoxicated driver in the 300 block of Chetco Avenue. Officers were unable to locate the vehicle. 

Fire, 9:36 p.m.: A report of heavy smoke that could be smelled by the caller was reported on Winchuck River Road, but the source could not be found. 

Fire, 10:21 p.m.: A driftwood fire was reported on Sporthaven Beach. The fire was left unattended and the winds were causing it to spread to driftwood piles. Harbor Fire arrived on scene and extinguished the flames.

Brookings police made  many traffic stops, warning drivers of failure to use seat belts, driving while suspended, failure to carry insurance and speeding. 

Saturday, May 4 

Dispute/fight, 1:45 a.m.: 98100 block of Daina Lane. 

Fire, 9:435 a.m.: A fire in driftwood on the beach near Sea Cliff Terrace was put out by Brookings Fire units. 

Misuse of 911, 12:28 p.m.: A non-injury fender bender was reported in the 16100 block of West Hoffeldt Lane. 

Assist Public works, 1:05 p.m.: Public works responded to report of raw sewage smell in the 1300 block of Chetco Avenue. 

Incomplete call, 1:15 p.m.: A person in the 600 block of Fifth Street made a call to 911 and hung up. On callback, dispatch was advised a neighbor had lost their little girl, but she was found as the person was calling. 

Non-injury traffic crash, 1:25 p.m.: An officer assisted student with information in the 600 block of Pioneer Road. 

Driving complaint, 3:16 p.m.: Units were unable to locate a vehicle which had been reported as swerving all over the road in the 16200 block of Highway 101.

Fire, 3:31 p.m.: Two 911 calls regarding a beach fire off North Indian Road in Smith River were transferred to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. 

Theft, 3:58 p.m.: The theft of boy’s bike from near KidTown was reported. 

Criminal mischief, 5:11 p.m.: Police received a report of motorcyclists not wearing helmets and tearing up Social Security Bar on the Chetco River. 

Dispute/fight, 8:10 p.m.: 96900 block of Swede Lane. 

Fire, 11:58 p.m.: Sporthaven Beach.

The police department received four calls, complaining of dogs left in cars in the heat, several traffic stops,  and two public assists. 

Sunday, May 5 

Loud noise, 1:37 a.m.: People speaking loudly on  a private porch agreed to keep the volume down in response to a noise complaint in the 500 block of Fern Street. 

Animal complaint: An ongoing dog barking problem in the 600 block of Spruce Street was resolved when the dog owners took their pets inside. 

Stalking, 4:45 a.m.: A man was reportedly stalking a store employee and bothering customers at Fred Meyer. Officers made contact with him and he headed back to Grants Pass. 

Alarm, 6:56 a.m.: 600 block of Fifth Street. 

Driving complaint, 8:36 a.m.: An officer stopped a vehicle that was reported to be swerving all over North Bank Chetco River Road near Highway 101. The driver told police he had been reaching for something on the floor. He was told to concentrate on his driving. 

Runaway, 12:48 p.m.: A motorist picked up a young boy walking on Highway 101 near Carpenterville Road and brought him to the police department after he told her he was running away. His parents picked him up. 

Fire, 1:51 p.m.: Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office contacted Brookings Police Department dispatch to advise of a fire in Harbor east of Highway 101. Harbor Fire Department responded to the 15700 block of Pelican Bay Drive and extinguished a mattress that had been set on fire. 

Burglary, 2:12 p.m.: A county resident reported that she interrupted a burglary in progress at her residence in the 96200 block of Foxglove Way. 

Tree down, 4 p.m.: A caller reported a tree down on Carpenterville Road near Duley Creek Road.

Threats, 4:53 p.m.: Caller in the 300 block of Fifth Street reported threats that had occurred earlier in the day. 

Possession of drugs, 6 p.m.: Citations were issued during a traffic stop on Chetco Avenue at Alder Street for possession of drugs,  less than an ounce marijuana and mushrooms. The reason for the stop was speed. 

Suspicious conditions, 11:22 p.m.: A sparking power pole in the 97900 block of West Benham Lane was reported to Coos-Curry Electric. 

Monday, May 6 

Theft, 6:19 a.m.: A citizen reported a quad stolen from the back of his truck in the 200 block of Del Norte Lane. He called back a few minutes later to say he found it. A friend put it in the backyard during the night without telling him. 

Non-injury vehicle accident, 7:39 a.m.: Chetco Avenue and North Bank Chetco River Road. 

Lost property, 8:36 a.m.: A citizen’s wallet was lost or stolen while he was shopping at a  Chetco Avenue fruit stand. 

Suspicious conditions, 9:13 a.m.: A resident in the 800 block of Fawn Drive was concerned about suspicious woman that lurks about the neighborhood in the morning hours for no apparent reason. 

Found property, 9:41 a.m.: Papers found in the 800 block of Chetco Avenue were placed in the lost and found drawer. 

 Criminal mischief, 11:35 a.m.: Offensive graffiti was reported on West Benham Lane. 

Stalking, 1:16 p.m.: Highway 101 and West Benham Lane. 

Disabled vehicle, 2:23 p.m.: A flatbed trailer in tow was disabled and partially blocking a lane at Old County and North Bank Chetco River roads, causing a hazard. 

DUII, 6:24: Center and Spruce streets.

Animal complaint, 8:52 p.m.: A shih-tzu reported was reported lost from Parkview Drive and Highway 101. The dog was found by another citizen and returned to its owner. 

Violation of restraining order, 11:05 p.m.: Citizen in the 1000 block of Easy Street with a restraining order against an estranged spouse requested documentation of suspicious phone calls made to her.

Brookings police also made traffic stops, and took animal complaints of dogs in cars during hot weather.
