April 1, 1926 -April 25, 2013

Ernest “Ernie” Nufer, 87, passed away April 25, 2013, at his Brookings home of 13 years, with his family at his side.

Ernie was born in Baden-Baden, Germany. His parents emigrated to Oak Park, Ill., in 1930. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class, in the PT Boat squadron in the South Pacific Theater during World War II.

He met and married Barbara Raitt, his wife of 62 years, in California.

They retired to Brookings in 1999, and joined their daughter Beth and her family, Byrne and Cody.

In 2005, The couple’s older daughter Dianalee and her husband moved from Magdalena, N.M. to join the family.

Ernie loved a good story, either to read or listen to. He was a skilled carpenter for many of his working years and in retirement used his skills building beautiful model ships and boats. Ernie generated much respect from those who knew him. He was the finest father and the best of husbands. His family will sorely miss his love and devotion.

He was preceded in death  by his three brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at  Brooking Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Ave. in Brookings.

A reception will follow.

Submitted by the family.
