“Everything worked today,” Head Coach Steve Bonde said. “Everybody was moving and really working together.”

The Lady Bruins softball team needed to work together to help starting pitcher Hannah Goergen keep her perfect game intact and capture the win, 11-0 over the Mustangs of Hidden Valley.

According to Bonde, the Mustangs made contact with the ball only five times and the Bruins’ infield gobbled up the ball for outs like a bear preparing for hibernation.

“They didn’t get a single ball out of the infield,” Bonde said. “Megan Strain had two great plays at third, Hannah Baron played great at shortstop and Mariahn Seavello played really well at second.”

Goergen had 10 strikeouts, no walks and no hits allowed to fulfill her part of the perfect game over five innings.

“Hannah was hitting all of her spots,” Bonde said. “She pitched perfectly.”

Offensively the Bruins had 17 hits — including 4 doubles and a triple — as a team and scored 11 runs.

“Megan Strain was just crushing the ball,” Bonde said. “So was Mymy. They weren’t a bad team, they just had a freshman pitcher who left the ball in the middle of the plate where it could get murdered.”

Morgan Early, who started playing softball last year, hit a double in her first varsity at bat, according to Bonde.

The Bruins are looking at the victory in a favorable light and are excited about the upcoming season.

“I think it is a good confidence builder,” Bonde said. “If we don’t win league, I’ll be shocked.

“Actually, I hope it brings back the feelings the girls had last year when they made it to the playoffs.”

The Lady Bruins will travel to Marshfield on Tuesday before heading to Phoenix on Saturday, March 23, for a doubleheader.
