Attorney: Auction off Upper Chetco school land

The land on which the former Chetco School sits on about five miles up the North Bank Chetco River Road is worth some money.

The buildings themselves? Not so much.

That was the opinion of Brookings attorney Ted Fitzgerald, who told the Brookings-Harbor School Board Wednesday night that “based on the condition of the property, the value is in the land.”

He recommended the board sell the property “as-is” through a public auction. He advised that the district start with a base price.

“It’s a great piece of property, and you will have interested parties,” Fitzgerald said.

The district decided to sell the property because there is no longer a need for it, and they can’t afford the upkeep, which, even with no major repairs, costs the district $10,000 to $12,000 annually, business manager Don Sweeney previously told the Curry Coastal Pilot.

Fitzgerald is still waiting to receive a number from the appraiser.

In other news, Brookings-Harbor High School junior Jessica Yock informed the board that the BHHS Leadership class delivered gifts to underprivileged families before winter break, helped set up Nature’s Coastal Holiday and volunteered at the light show.

Yock also told the board that Saturday is the Snowball dance for winter sports, and that many BHHS seniors presented their senior projects Wednesday.

In his Superintendent’s report, Brian Hodge said that Azalea Middle School will be getting an electronic reader board, and that lots of BHHS students are interested in participating in the Beyond BHHS program next year.

He also said the special education program at the high school will undergo changes during spring semester. The home economics room at BHHS will be used for special-needs students, and the program will be changing its curriculum and examining how to keep students in school.

Finally, board members were asked to bring to the February meeting three nominations for the district’s Distinguished Service Recognition award.
