One Last Point: Rest and relaxation? Yeah, right

Everybody needs a break. Whether it is a couple weeks of vacation from work or a month off between the end of the regular season and a bowl game, everybody needs a break.

The Oregon Ducks took off little more than a month between their last game of the regular season and their appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

They destroyed Kansas State and demonstrated, with their 35-17 win, that it should have been Ducks versus Crimson Tide matchup for  the National Title.

Chip Kelly took some time to think over offers from the NFL and made the best decision of his life – to stay at Oregon for at least another season.

The Seattle Seahawks took a week off and not only did they beat the Redskins, they took out Robert Griffin III – horrible news for RG III, but it’s what happens when the Seahawks take a week to prepare.

It doesn’t always work well to have time off: The Detroit Tigers had more time off before the World Series than the San Francisco Giants did and they got swept.

I think that in baseball – a game of streaks and superstition – time off is the exact opposite of every other example.

I took the week of New Year’s Day off.

I thought it would be a perfect time for some vacation because there wasn’t anything happening in high school sports – except a couple of non-league games that my co-workers could cover.

I thought maybe I could get a much-needed recharge before winter sports began in earnest.

Instead, I spent time with my four kids, my wife and my house (read the last as my never-ending restoration project.)

I got a bunch done, had a blast playing with the kids and really enjoyed some quality time with my wife, but I found when I came back to the office on Tuesday morning that I needed a vacation to recover from my vacation.

It could be worse: I could be the Tigers, or the Wildcats, or the Redskins, or any number of other teams that lost this year after too much time off.

Luckily for me, the week I took off was mostly rainless and no rust formed on my writing, and picture-taking skills.

Bring on the winter sports schedule!
