Fill out ballots and get them in

Ballots for the Nov. 2 general election will be arriving in the mailboxes of Curry County registered voters as early as Friday. We urge you to fill them out and mail them or drop them off at designated drop sites before the 8 p.m. Nov 2 deadline.

There are plenty of races and measures on the ballot, and plenty of reasons to vote. Voters will select candidates for offices from U.S. president on down to Curry County commissioners and Brookings mayor.

A good source for information on state measures is the nonpartisan Voters’ Guide issued by the League of Women Voters of Oregon, which can be found at the Pilot and the Chetco Public Community Library. Also, readers can depend on the Pilot, which has and is publishing profiles on local candidates as well as candidate forums during which state, county and city candidates fielded questions from citizens.

We do this because it’s expected of us, but also because of our dedication to preserving one of the greatest features of democracy: Voting.

Democracy works best when as many people as possible participate in elections. Oregon goes out of its way to make it easy with the mail-in ballots, but the first step must be undertaken individually.

Casting votes will give each and every one of us a say in who will make the important decisions that affect all of our lives and the future of Curry County, Oregon and the nation.
