Chetco Grange 765 will host a free program featuring the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association (OOTFA) from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

The event, which will feature a concert and acoustic jam, will be at the Chetco Grange Community Center, 97895 Shopping Center Ave., Harbor.

The OOTFA District 5, which covers the area from Florence to Harbor, has been featured at the Chetco Grange for the past several years and the venue has been so successful that fiddlers from throughout the state now join the district here, event organizers said.

For this month’s program, the Old Time Fiddlers will perform on stage from noon to 2 p.m. with Jim Sylvester as the featured musician. Following the Fiddlers’ presentation will be an acoustic circle jam which includes local musicians from 2:15 to 4 p.m.

Sylvester came to Oregon’s South Coast in 1990.  He plays guitar, mandolin and fiddle, and has performed in many West Coast bands, including his rhythm and blues dance band Sly and Company. The fiddle he now plays belonged to his wife’s great-grandmother, who purchased it from Montgomery Ward more than 100 years ago. It was found in its original wooden box in a closet where it had remained unplayed for many years until it was discovered by Jim’s son, Alex.

The program is free and all ages are welcome. Refreshments will be available.  For additional information, including playing in the jam session portion of the program, call 541-469-6787.
