The 20th annual Southern Oregon Kite Festival is scheduled for today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Port of Brookings Harbor Kite Field on Boat Basin Road.

The free event features some of the best kite flyers and kite makers in America demonstrating their skills, choreographed to music. Spectators are welcome to set up chairs and blankets along the perimeter of the Kite Field.

Kite flyers planning to make an appearance include Kevin Bayless, who has been building kites since the 1980s; Ron Bohart, an award-winning stunt kite flyer; Dave and Diane Butler, who are known for the artwork they create on their kites; Archie and Jeanie Clay, who have a collection of more than 200 kites; and Team iQuad, which has delighted audiences at previous festivals.

The weekend’s activities include children’s kite-making workshops. These free workshops are held both days from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. for ages 3 and older.  Children are invited onto the field after the workshops to fly their kites in the children’s kite parade. Vendor booths provide food and kite-related crafts.

Parking will be available near the boardwalk. Free shuttles will transport people from the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce office to the kite field.

Kite auction/banquet

In addition to festivities at the port, a Kite Auction and Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Best Western Beachfront Inn conference center, near the kite field at 16008 Boat Basin Road. Local businesses and kite flyers are donating merchandise and kites to be auctioned off.

There will also be a pancake breakfast served by the Harbor Fire Volunteers from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Harbor Fire Hall, 98069 West Benham Lane.
