Think you can do better? Run for City Council

Are you frustrated with Brookings city government?  Think you can do a better job?

Well, now is your chance.

Curry City Councilman Dave Gordon has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in November. Incumbent City Councilors Brent Hodges and Ron Hedenskog have not confirmed whether they will seek re-election. Neither had picked up nomination packets as of Tuesday – although they and other interested citizens have until Aug. 28 to do so.

Already, at least two people are seeking election to Mayor or one of two city council positions on the November ballot.

It’s a good start, but we’d like to see more residents join  the race. Think of it as an opportunity to bring topics you think are important into a public forum – and the minds of your fellow citizens.

In Oregon, we elect our neighbors to be the volunteer policy makers for our local governments – not just the city of Brookings, but library boards, port commissions, school boards and dozens of local agencies that operate fire districts, provide water and keep up some rural roads.

For those who openly question or criticize the actions of local government: Here’s a golden opportunity to step from the stands and into the arena, to become an active participant in the democratic process.

The citizens who fill these unpaid, sometimes thankless positions, are crucial to keeping the inner workings of our society running effectively.

Many who have served in such positions have often commented about the satisfaction and pride that comes with taking an active role in their community.

We applaud their involvement and encourage others to follow suit. Now’s your chance.
