Thousands of spectators lined Chetco Avenue and Oak Streets to enjoy sunny skies and “Gems of the South Coast” during the 73rd Azalea Festival parade.

Winning the top award – the Sweepstakes Award – was a pirate ship, perhaps not seaworthy but was able to float down the parade route, entered by C&K Markets. Judging the parade were members of Soroptimist International of Brookings, who were seated in the bed of a pickup parked in front of Kerr’s Ace Hardware.

 Also winning awards at the Azalea Park program following the parade were:

•President’s Award, best use of flowers – entry 24, South Coast Humane Society;

•Grand Marshal’s Award, best use of special effects – entry 12, Marine Corps League;

•Queen’s Award, best use of color – entry 49, Curry County Democrats;

•Mayor’s Award, most original – entry 43, Trash Dogs;

•Best Equestrian Unit – entry 45, Curry County 4-H;

•Best Antique and Classic Car – entry 41, Chevrolet Van Pelt fire truck, which was purchased new in 1947 by the Adin Fire District in Modoc and Lassen counties in California;

•Best Band – Brookings-Harbor Community Theater.

There were no bands in the parade, which caused the judges to have a dilemma. Because the Brookings-Harbor Community Theater cast of “Grease” walked the parade route and performed the song “Greased Lightning” at several places along the way, they were considered and won the award.

Parade floats also carried dignitaries including Pioneer Citizen Helen Hanscam, Grand Marshals Tom and Phyllis Kerr, and the Azalea Festival court – Queen Louie Deraita and princesses Roxanne Gothard, Jaime Alto, Emerald Dodson and Breanna Moen.
