Track travels to Douglas prepared to set records

“She showed up ready to race Tuesday,” BHHS throwing coach Terry Axel said. “Shaylin Curtis had a great day.”

Curtis’ 5:40.90 first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run wasn’t the only result rolling off Axel’s tongue after the Bruins traveled to Douglas High School for Tuesday’s track meet. 

“Samantha Hage had an almost four foot PR,” he added, “that’s huge.”

 

Hage threw 83-10 to take second place in the discus and improve on her previous best of 80-3.

The track and field team had a number of personal records set as well as taking second place overall in the team scores for the girls and fourth place overall for the boys.

Personal records set on the girls’ team included Curtis in the 1,500; Mallory Darger in the 1,500; Lesley Fernandez in the shot put; Addi Fitzgerald in the 300-meter hurdles; Hage in the discus; Jordyn Keys in the 800-meter run; Kim Medina in the 200-meter dash; Kaitlyn Mitts in the shot put, discus and javelin; and Natalie Pena in the javelin.

Personal records set on the boys’ team included Adan Brambila in the 1,500-meter run; Gabe Brazelton in the long jump; Arman Carrasco in the 1,500-meter run;  Tyree Dingle in the 200-meter dash; Shaine Graham in the long jump; Scott Hedenskog in the shot put; Dylan Hiller in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run; Cole Kellum in the long jump; Zach Konkel in the pole vault; Carlos Lira in the discus; Kedrick Nelson in the 100-meter dash; Jason Sharp in the 800-meter run, high jump and triple jump; Tim Sullivan in the 1,500-meter run; and Fernando Villa in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 800-meter run.

First place finishers in events included Northrup, 100-meter dash, 13.97 and high jump, 4-10; Brittney Lamar, 400-meter dash, 1:16.68; Curtis, 1,500-meter run, 5:40.90; Fitzgerald, 100-meter hurdles, 17.85 and 300-meter hurdles, 52.50; Graham, 110-meter hurdles, 17.61; and Chandler Gotfried, javelin, 147-08.

The Bruins will host their last home track meet of the season at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Elmer Bankus stadium.
