Marine Corps League celebrates 25th anniversary

The Calvin E. Murphy Detachment 578 Marine Corps League celebrated its 25th anniversary April 21 following the installation of officers.

The detachment members and guests were treated to a piece of anniversary cake during the event at the Tea Room. Each member was presented with a 25th anniversary pin, celebrating the detachment’s 25 years service to the community.

New officers were installed by John Woods, the North West Division national vice commandant. He was assisted by Jim Hale, the Department of Oregon commandant.

 

The following officers were installed for the 2012-13 year: Linda Schamel, commandant; Mike Noonan, senior vice commandant, Web sergeant and newsletter editor; Jim Metcalfe, junior vice commandant; Fred Pate, judge advocate; Allan Stewart, paymaster; Marlys Boyer, adjutant; Dick Weber, chaplain; Donnie Raymer; sergeant at arms; David Hitzman; quartermaster; Dick Tylock; ceremonial OIC; Bill Cochran     Toys for Tots coordinator; Bob Gilmore, junior past commandant.

Individual Merit Commendations were presented to members for their various activities throughout the past year, including community service projects, detachment projects, and Toys 4 Tots. In addition, the Honors Funeral Detail received Distinguished Service Awards for Exceptional Service to the community.

Cochran received a special award for his many years as Toys 4 Tots coordinator and the developer of the detachment’s float entered in the Azalea Festival parade.

The detachment staff from last year was presented with replicas of Marine swords for their outstanding service to the detachment and the community.

David and Sharon Hitzman were presented with the Associate Members of the Year Award for their outstanding service to the community.

Jim Metcalfe was presented with the detachment’s Marine of the Year Award. 

Also in attendance was Marine Recruiter Staff Sgt. Alan Inchaurregui.
