Local economy – it’s not all bad news

One needs only to read today’s headlines – here and elsewhere –  to realize that the overall economic climate of this country – in fact, that of the entire world – is still struggling.

However, we’d like to point out the silver lining from the dark clouds – at least here in Curry County.

We are all aware of several businesses that have closed down in recent months; however, the bad news often obscures the good news. People have a natural tendency to focus on the negative rather than see the broader picture of what’s really happening in town: A number of new business have opened or are about to open.

The big news of course is the grand opening of Bi-Mart in Brookings, which will bring much-needed money into the community, and provide employments for many local residents

There are also several other, new businesses, including a new Thai food restaurant, set to open in Brookings within the next few months.

A week from today the Pilot will publish the results of our popular Readers’ Choice Awards, which spotlights favorite businesses in Curry County. The comments by voters and the winners offer insight into the many services and products our community has to offer.

Given the current state of the economy, it’s important that we all find ways to support our local merchants, who, as a whole, meet nearly all our shopping needs.

Their strength will only help make our community strong – and keep the dark clouds at bay.
