Community theater: a year in review

The past year in Brookings-Harbor theater could probably best be summarized with My Fair Lady Pirates of the Caribbean land on Treasure Island where they meet a group of nuns taking 39 Steps to put on a Las Vegas show, but they ran into a problem when Robin Hood gave away all the tickets.

Perhaps that’s a little far fetched.

But there is no question that between the Chetco Pelican Players and Brookings-Harbor Community Theater, theater is alive and well in Southern Curry County.

Both theaters presented musicals that drew big crowds, as well as comedies and pirate shows. There were too many plays to be named, not to mention the numerous children’s productions.

There were even times when it was thought that a show had to be canceled, but as they say in show business, “The show must go on” and it did. Chetco Pelican Players was all set to go, but was canceled for lack of a pianist. However, a professional pianist heard the news and came to the rescue.

It was also a sad year for theater as at least three passed away: Andy Drago, a founding member of Chetco Pelican Players and a big help with Brookings-Harbor Community Theater; Glenna Craig, who stitched together many pirate costumes and wardrobe for other plays; and Nathan Dodgen, a young thespian who overcame his disability to perform.

The new year promises to be a busy year as well.

Tickets for “Pinocchio,” Brookings-Harbor Community Theater’s season opener, are already on sale. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth younger than 18 and may be purchased in advance at Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings and New Wave Video in Harbor.

Other plays coming up include “Cemetery Club, “Taming of the Shrew” and “West Side Story.”

Chetco Pelican Players opens its 2012 season with “Cupid and Psyche. Successive performances include “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Arsenic and Old Lace” and a local-themed melodrama “Logger’s Rhapsody (or Don’t Call me Stumpy)”
