After a Saturday full of competition the Brookings-Harbor High School track and field team will be sending eight athletes to compete for bragging rights, a medal and the ability to say, “I’m the OSAA 4A State Champion.”

Senior Heidi Moore will compete in three events, the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay.

The other members of the relay team who will be joining her are senior Ashley Juarez, junior Kelsa Northrup and freshman Jordyn Keys.

Northrup and Keys will also compete in the high jump and the 400-meter dash respectively.

Senior distance runner Ally Manley, who won the 1,500-meter run on Saturday by a full two seconds over her nearest competitor, is excited to be competing in two races, the 1,500- and the 3,000-meter runs, despite facing some physical challenges.

“I have a stress fracture in my fibula,” Manley said. “I’ve also got some muscles in my thigh that are pulling at my knee.”

Manley isn’t one to let physical issues stand in her way though.

“My goal every race is to just try my hardest,” she said. “I like to pray and visualize winning for every race.”

Running in two races at the state championships is something that Manley has never experienced and she is looking forward to getting pushed and she hopes to set a personal record, she said.

Senior Catherine Axel is headed to state to run the 100-meter hurdles, while senior Geoff Gowman will be looking for new heights as he competes in the high jump.

Senior Cody Stumpenhaus will be the only boys competitor competing in two events as he was a surprise placer in the discus and conquered the shot put ring with a throw of 48-01 1/2 to take first in the event he was favored to win.

One notable absence from the state squad was senior Dylan Roberts who was favored to win the 200-meter dash at the Far West League championships.

Roberts pulled up limping just 50-meters into the race with leg problems.

“I felt it pull,” Roberts said. “I just couldn’t run full out.”

Roberts finished the race limping, but he finished, even though he missed his opportunity for a trip to the state tournament.

The Bruins girls were second place finishers at the league championship with a team score of 122 to champion Siuslaw’s 149.

The boys team finished in fifth place with a team score of 96.

The OSAA 4A State Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene. Events begin at 10 a.m.
