Go Bruins!

March 14, 2009 05:00 am

The Brookings-Harbor High School boys varsity basketball team won the semi-final Friday night and will play the Central High School Panthers tonight for the state championship!

The team’s efforts this season has delivered a blast of sunshine into an otherwise dismal world of budget cuts and layoffs.

The team’s run at a state championship – the first in 20 years – has energized the community, and people responded by posting “Go Bruins” signs in their car windows, storefronts and business marquees. On Wednesday, police cars and fire trucks escorted the team’s bus out of town and an airplane was hired to fly over town blasting out the song “We Are The Champions” from a loudspeaker.

On Thursday, the school board announced it would end Friday’s school day early so people had enough time to drive to Corvallis and support their beloved team that night.

By Friday, community pride was running at a fever pitch.

Despite a great season record of 25-0, the Bruins face their biggest challenge. They will have to play their best tonight – and they deserve all the support they can get. And they’re getting it. A sizeable contingent of the Bruin faithful attended Friday’s game in Corvallis and will be there for today’s final show down.

Pilot Sports Editor Chad Snyder and photographer Jef Hatch have been courtside since Wednesday, posting game reports and photos on the our web site (www.currypilot.com).

Check the Web site tonight for game reports and the final results.

The Bruins team is a special group of athletes and coaches representing not just their high school, but the entire community. Join us today as we all cheer them on.
