Ryan Farr decided to go far away for college to learn a different perspective to physical therapy.

After attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, Farr said he decided to head to Europe to continue his studies. He attended University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Farr said he had a choice between two schools. After weighing his options, he decided the university in Belfast was the best choice to get a feel for a different culture and to get a world view on physical therapy.

Here its more sports and acute therapy, Farr said. There its more chronic therapy.

In Europe, they use there hands more, he said. Its a lot of manual therapy.

After graduating Sept. 10, Farr, with the help of his wife, Hayley, found an opening at Coastal Physical Therapy. After a phone interview, he came to Brookings and started working in October.

I love the human body, Farr said about his decision to be a physical therapist. There is great joy and satisfaction in improving peoples health.

His specialty at Coastal Physical Therapy is aquatic therapy. Farr said he works three days a week in Gold Beach and two days in the pool at Best Western Brookings Inn.

Its fun. People love it, Farr said about aquatic therapy.

Farr said physical therapy helps people who are stroke victims, who have heart conditions, have knee and back problems, the whole gamut.

Much of the healing process is up to the clients, though, not just the physical therapist, he said.

Its important for people to know they have a lot of control over their condition, Farr said. Improving the quality of life, thats what its all about.

Farr is available by appointment by calling (541) 469-7314. Coastal Physical Therapy is at 580 Fifth St.
